Morocco is one of the world’s most beautiful places to travel and enjoy. It’s not just the scenery that’s so breathtaking but also the culture, food, and people. While you can travel to the country in a group, sometimes the best trips are those you take alone.
Of course, you may be wondering if it’s cheaper to travel as a group. Believe it or not, you can actually travel around the country on less than $30 a day, but you need to be smart and frugal about how you’re spending the money.
Table of Contents
Now, the first thing to understand is what each city is like. For example, Marrakech is considered a busy but amazing city, Casablanca is the home to one of the world’s most beautiful mosques, Tangier has outstanding beaches, Essaouira is a deteriorating medina and Chefchaouen is considered the world’s most gorgeous cities.
With all that to explore, how can you go about visiting each area for cheap and get the full enjoyment out of it? It boils down to doing things that don’t involve money – hiking, checking out the mosques and getting into the water.
Wander The Medinas
In every Moroccan city is a historic district, called medinas, that’s made up of three things:
• Residential
• Food market
• Shops
These buildings are often very close together and look as if they’d fall at any minute, but certainly worthwhile if you like older areas of any area you visit.
Walk Torda Gorge and High Atlas
There’s something to be said about walking in a country with no real sense of purpose. However, you can get a sense of purpose when you choose to hike up the Atlas Mountains, which spans 1,500 miles from the Moroccan west coast to Tunisia. Here, you have the continent’s tallest peak – Jebel Toubkal at 13,671. The best thing? Hiking can be done all year long but the best months are April and May.
The Torda Gorge canyon has become quite popular for people who love to hike. While challenging, it’s something very unique to Morocco and something to try if you want to spend the day hiking.
Partake In Cooking Classes
The great thing about traveling around Morocco is that you can partake in any number of cooking classes, which allow you to make traditional Moroccan dishes. What are traditional Moroccan dishes? They are an amalgamation of Arabic, Berber, French, Middle Eastern and Turkish cuisines. The riads (palaces) of the bigger cities such as Marrakech offer these cooking classes. All you have to do is purchase fresh produce from the market outside and make the dish.
Check Out Historical Sites
When it comes to Moroccan history, you have all kinds of places you can check out. For example, you can visit the Tangiers, which are located on the northern coast of Africa near the Strait of Gibraltar. There is a lot of Tangiers’ history, which includes a look at the various civilizations and cultures. Due to the presence of colonial powers, the Tangiers received a plethora of attention, which led to an increase in both American and European visitors to the area.
Another well-known historical site is the Ancient City of Volubilis, which was built in Roman times. To date, it’s one of the most preserved ruins of the entire world due to the lack of tourists that visit it. If you want to escape the other busy parts of the country, this is certainly worth checking out.
Enjoy Beach and Water Activities
Morocco is well-known for being the place to be for water sports and beach activities. These activities allow you to escape the hustle and bustle of other towns/cities and enjoy some time for yourself and relax. And, if you love fish, there is an area some hours away from Marrakech that’s called Essaouira that is very popular with British tourists.
