Trips to Jorf khettaras
Explore trips to Jorf Khettaras, a fascinating spot near Erfoud in the Draa-Tafilalet region of Morocco. This unique village gives you a chance to learn how Moroccans long ago solved their irrigation problems. The ancient khettaras, or qanats, built in the 14th century, are a network of irrigation channels about 30 feet underground.
At Jorf Khettaras, you can actually walk through these underground tunnels and see how water flowed by gravity through channels stretching 12-15 miles to irrigate the fields above. For a hands-on experience, you can even sit in a chair and kick your legs on a wheel to bring up baskets, just like the workers did when they were digging these tunnels centuries ago.
