Travel QuestionsCategory: MoroccoPlanning Our Moroccan Adventure from Lisbon, Portugal
Joana asked 5 months ago

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are currently planning our next adventure to Morocco from Lisbon, Portugal. However, we find ourselves at a crossroads between two enchanting destinations.

Essaouira seems appealing, but we've noticed that most flight platforms only offer direct flights to Marrakech and Casablanca, not to Essaouira as part of a package deal. Is this common? Do you have any tips on how to reach Essaouira smoothly?

On the other hand, Marrakech captivates us with its vibrant atmosphere, but we're hesitant due to its inland location, far from the soothing embrace of the sea.

Your guidance and expertise would be invaluable as we navigate this decision.

Warm regards,

Joana

Planning Our Moroccan Adventure from Lisbon, Portugal

Hi Joana,

Exciting to hear about your upcoming Moroccan adventure! Let me help you with your dilemma between Essaouira and Marrakech.

For Essaouira, while direct flights might not be as common as to Marrakech and Casablanca, you can easily reach Essaouira from Marrakech by either bus or private transfer. The journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, and the roads are quite scenic. Alternatively, you can fly into Marrakech, spend a few days exploring the city, and then head to Essaouira for a coastal escape. The trip from Marrakech to Essaouira is not so far and is definitely worth it for the charming coastal atmosphere.

Another option is to fly directly from Lisbon Airport (LIS) to Essaouira's Mogador Airport (ESU) with Royal Air Morocco. This could be a convenient choice if you prefer a direct flight and want to start your coastal adventure right away. However, keep in mind that flight options may vary, so it's worth checking availability.

Regarding flights from Lisbon, I did a quick search on Skyscanner, and it seems like the most convenient route is flying from Lisbon to Madrid and then changing the flight in Madrid to Essaouira. This might be a good option if you prefer a smoother travel experience.

While Essaouira offers a serene coastal experience, landing in Marrakech might be the best option for you. Marrakech serves as a hub for exploring both the vibrant city life and nearby coastal towns like Essaouira. This way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds during your Moroccan adventure.

Ultimately, both destinations offer unique experiences, so it depends on what you're looking for in your Moroccan adventure. Feel free to reach out if you need more information or assistance in planning your trip.

Happy travels! 👋
