Alcohol is not used in everyday life by most Moroccans. The vast majority of Moroccans are Muslim and do not drink alcohol. In general, when visiting friends or family, you will be welcomed with fresh mint tea. This national drink is prepared with green tea and mint leaves with lots of sugar. So there is no alcohol in it.

Morocco’s alcohol laws can be a bit confusing, but the country allows for a rather lenient policy – With one important exception. It is technically legal for tourists to purchase alcohol in licensed hotels, bars, or supermarkets. In almost every city there are also specialized stores that sell only all kinds of alcoholic beverages, from local to international ones. So only get your drinks from places with a permit!

Any attempt to purchase or consume alcohol outside of the permitted areas can lead to problems. The alcohol section of supermarkets is closed on Fridays and does not sell any alcohol to locals during Islamic holidays.

Licensed bars and clubs often have no windows and you cannot be seen from the outside. There are a few bars and restaurants that are allowed to serve alcoholic drinks on the terrace but only for tourists. Many Moroccan drinkers are not allowed to drink on the street. They usually drink in licensed bars or at home. Heavy alcohol use on the street can therefore lead directly to arrest.

Morocco also has some good local beers. The country’s premium beer is Casablanca, but the populists among the locals are Flag Spéciale and Stork.  In general, imported alcohol is very expensive in the country because of the taxes. You can still legally bring alcohol into Morocco, but there is a limit. The exact permitted limits are unclear, but it is recommended that you do not carry more than 1 liter of alcohol with you.

First of all, you have to make sure that you are not breaking any laws by going out. Morocco has strict rules regarding alcohol consumption. Consuming alcohol on the street and buying it from unlicensed places is alcohol illegal in Marrakech. And it is also against the law to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 18. So if you are a minor you are not allowed to enter bars or nightclubs.
