Merzouga is definitely a great place for an off-road adventure. My 4×4 rally desert tour started after having a healthy breakfast in the desert camp, close to the sandy dunes of Erg Chebbi. I and my buddy traveler were able to cross and explore the small Berber villages like Hassi Labied and Khamlia. Just when arriving at El Hassi Labied we stopped for a while in a garden where there is an ancient irrigation system of canals.
On the way to Khamlia, we met the locals who showed us their lovely desert foxes. One of them even tried to sell me one. Here are as well other wildlife animals and plants that grow only in the desert. Finally, we arrived at Khamlia. Khamlia is known as the village of black people who escaped as slaves from Sudan. We were warmly welcomed by Mustapha ( a member of the band) with a cup of tea while enjoying their spiritual Gnawa music.
Later on, leaving Khamlia, our next stop was at a panoramic view of the golden dunes near the Algerian border. Around 12:30 AM, we began to get hungry. My mate asked me to stop for a picnic lunch under the shade of a tamarisk tree. Afterward, we continued to visit a nomad family where we were meeting family members and learn about their Bedouin lifestyle and share with them some traditions while enjoying a delicious cup of tea. After that, we visited a plateau where fossils and black volcanic rocks can be found. Then back to our accommodation after discovering this wonderful part of the desert.
